Meet Kikwetu Kenya Coffee Company at the 61st Farmers Market
As we spotlight coffee in our community this week, we’re thrilled to highlight Kikwetu Kenya Coffee Company, a beloved vendor at the 61st Street Farmers Market.
Co-founded by Lee Cox (Mollo) and his wife Martha, Kikwetu is a Kenyan-born, Chicago-made coffee company bridging cultures through every cup. “We were born and raised in Kenya and have made our lives in Chicago. This business is our way of connecting the two,” says Lee.
Kikwetu serves up hot coffee, cold brew, and flavorful specialty drinks every Saturday in Woodlawn. But what truly sets them apart is their Kenyan-style pastry, Mendazi, made from a cherished family recipe Lee has known since childhood. “My mother is actually here today [day of interview]—adding her special touch.”
With a presence at 11 markets across the city, Kikwetu brings warmth, heritage, and flavor wherever they go. So next time you're strolling through the market, stop by and experience a taste of Kenya—right here in our neighborhood.
