Celebrate Summer’s Abundance with Berries

As we approach the end of June, summer is in full swing, and that means berries! At this week’s market, you will find fresh strawberries, red and black raspberries, and blueberries, as well as vendors using them in everything from baked goods to ice cream to vinaigrettes.

In celebration of all things berries, let’s dig into some fascinating stories, fun facts, and delicious recipes.

FUN FACTS:

  1. In many Anishinaabe teachings, the strawberry is considered the first berry and the first medicine. It’s called ode’imin because its shape resembles the human heart — and just like the heart, it represents love, compassion, and emotional truth.

The heartberry is often the first fruit to ripen in the spring, and its appearance marks a time of renewal and reawakening. This timing is deeply symbolic, reminding us of the importance of beginning again with honesty, softness, and kindness — especially toward ourselves and those we love.

  2. Berries are one of nature’s superfoods: high in antioxidants, beneficial for people with high blood pressure, improving memory and brain function, helping regulate blood sugar levels, and potentially even preventing certain forms of cancer.

  3. Black bears really love berries, consuming up to 30,000 a day in a good year.

PRO TIP:

If you plan on eating your berries right away, don’t put them right into the fridge! Rinse, dry thoroughly, and keep them at room temperature. This will allow their natural flavors to reach their peak. Put them in the fridge within 24 hours if you want to keep them fresh for longer.

FOR OUR SNAP SHOPPERS:

SNAP recipients can buy twice as many berries with our Link Match program! We will double the value of your SNAP funds with Link Match vouchers that you can use to purchase fresh fruits and vegetables at the market.
