61st Street Farmers Market - June 4
What a Market we have in store for you this Saturday on 61st Street! For the first time this season, we may actually see the sun! Plus, Strawberries are here, and the day will be filled with special guests and fun for the whole family, including dancing at noon and a farm on a truck!
• The first Strawberries of the season will be at the Market this Saturday! Ellis Family Farms, Mick Klug Farms and Genesis Growers will all have Strawberries. There is still a lot of Rhubarb to go with the strawberries to make that perfect spring pie.
The Market offers all you need to prepare that perfect meal at home, but sometimes you need a little something to give you the energy needed for an action-packed day at the Market. Whether it is breakfast, lunch or snack, there are many prepared foods to choose from:
• Yah’s Vegan Soul Food: Delicious vegan cuisine prepared fresh daily.
• Subterranean Foods: This week try the Seasonal Breakfast Taco (NEW) or the Market favorite Toasted Spinach, Asparagus and 3 Cheese Phyllo Wrap.
• Universal Crepes: Made-to-order farmers market crepes.
• Brown Sugar Bakery: Lovingly-baked Bread Pudding, Brownies, Cup Cakes, Muffins, Cookies…
This week’s Market has many fun and educational activities for the whole family.
• 10:30am – Chef Demo: Chef Courtney Turner and her trusted assistant Natalie of Common Threads will be showing our young (and older) ones how to prepare simple, healthy meals using Market products. This week’s special - Natalie’s Fresh Tuna Tostadas!
• 10:00am to 1:00pm – Truck Farm Chicago will be our Market School attraction for the day. "Truck Farm Chicago is a simple concept with a big impact. It's a mini-farm planted in the back of a biodiesel-fueled pickup truck. The Farm-on-Wheels is a traveling ‘vegetable patch’ that provides a rural experience for Chicago's city-bound kids." Kids will see how vegetables are grown, get to paint the truck with their favorite fruit and vegetables, and receive healthy recipes.
• NEW The Season at Noon: "Let's Move!" says First Lady Michelle Obama, and “new” at the Market this year is Noon-time Move-time, hosted by local studio Chaturanga Holistic Fitness. This week, at 12 noon, come clap, stomp, jump and shake to the Afro-Brazilian fusion tunes in a half-hour Zumba dance led by Chaturanga owner Marylee Bussard. All ages welcome!"
See you at the Market!
