61st Street Farmers Market - September 17
Greetings Farmers Market Friends!
I would have to say that this is my favorite part of the farmers market season – beautiful and mild temperatures to stroll the Market, wonderful selection of products to choose from, thoughts of hearty comfort foods, planning for the Indoor Market season… Well, I don’t want to get ahead of myself. More on the 61st Street Indoor Farmers Market in the weeks to come.
For now, let’s enjoy September’s bounty. Here are some highlights for this week’s Market.
- Faith’s Farm – Fresh Grass-fed Belted Galloway Beef. Lots of great cuts! Pork Give Away: one package of Cracklins with EVERY purchase! (While supplies last). REAL Soap: two new scents: Anise and Honey & Oatmeal. Kim also has lots of Halloween-themed Ducky Soap. A great gift for your favorite Goblins. Is it time for Halloween already? Luckily, Winter Squash (i.e. pumpkins) are starting to make their way to the Market.
- Genesis Growers will have a wide selection of Winter Squash: Acorn, Baby Hubbard, Butternut, Kabocha, Long of Naples, Pink Banana, Turk's Turban, Pie Pumpkin.
- Ellis Family Farms and Mick Klug Farms have lots of Apples, including everyone’s favorite - Honey Crisp! Along with a variety of apples, you’ll see Pears, Peaches, Blueberries, Plums, Grapes, and coming soon (maybe next week) - Cider!
Our special guest this week will be Shedd Aquarium! Sustainable Seafood Educator Brooke Havlik will be doing double duty on Saturday, working the Market School tent and conducting the Chef Demo.
From 10am to 1pm at Market School, learn about Sustainable Seafood: Protecting our Waters, One Bite at a Time. Your seafood choices can have a big impact on the health of our waters worldwide. Join conservation expert Brooke Havlik from Shedd Aquarium to learn how to make smart seafood choices that are both good for you and good for the planet!
10:30am Chef Demo: Fish of the Month – To keep in the spirit of all things local, Brooke will demonstrate Shedd’s Fish of the Month recipe: Sustainably-caught Lake Whitefish with Spiced Carrots and Mint Yogurt.
