61st Street Farmers Market - August 6

6 Aug 2011 09:00

As one of our farmers just said, “Hot Diggity!” With this time of year comes great excitement. Summer is here, the crops are coming in, and during the next couple months, we will be enjoying the peak of the Midwest growing season.

This is the time when the farmers’ stands expand and fill with the tremendous variety that our region has to offer - Beets, Cantaloupe, Carrots, Cucumbers, Eggplant, Peppers, Tomatoes, Sweet Corn, Zucchini, Yellow and Green Summer Squash and a lot more.

This Saturday’s highlights include:

· Mick Klug Farms and Ellis Family Farms: New this week – Nectarines and White Peaches! Blackberries and Peaches are in full production, as well as Red Raspberries, Blueberries and Apricots. This may be your last chance for Sweet Cherries, so get them while they’re available.

· Faith’s Farm - New and limited product: Old Fashion Salt and Pepper Breakfast Link Sausages. Kim also has Spicy Italian Sausage back in stock. Pork Give Away: Free package of Cracklin' with a $25 purchase - a $9 value. REAL Soap - buy 3 and get 1 Free!

· B’Gabs Goodies – Carrot Cake, and be sure to ask about their Ice Cream Sandwiches.

· Subterranean Foods - Breakfast Tacos with tomatoes, peppers, basil sauce and Chihuahua cheese; Breakfast Burritos with potatoes, beans, corn, scallions and parsley sauce; and Brunch Burritos with corn, beans, kale, peppers, manchego cheese and parsley sauce.

10:30am Chef Demo: Chef Dana Cox (local chef/teacher/ag-tivist!) of The Honest Meal Project (www.thehonestmealproject.com) will prepare Fried Green Tomato Caprese Salad and Cucumber-Mint "Coolers" to refresh the spirit!!

10:00am to 1:00pm – Truck Farm Chicago will be our Market School attraction for the day. "Truck Farm Chicago is a simple concept with a big impact. It's a mini-farm planted in the back of a biodiesel-fueled pickup truck. The Farm-on-Wheels is a traveling ‘vegetable patch’ that provides a rural experience for Chicago's city-bound kids." Kids will see how vegetables are grown, sample veggies from the Truck, make Newspaper Pots and have lots of fun!

See you at the Market!
