National Women's Day celebration with ECHOES OF SOUTHERN AFRICA
Come to the Experimental Station on Sunday, August 9 from 3-6:30 PM for a free celebration of the South African holiday, National Women's Day, presented by Echoes of Southern Africa. Columbia College history professor Lisa Brock-Cunningham will lead a discussion of the history and current status of women in South Africa. Echoes of Southern Africa will perform, as will various spoken word artists. There will also be free food and refreshments.
Those of you who attended Celebrate Experimental Station will remember the ESA multi-generational troupe's vibrant dances and songs, taken from both Southern African tribal traditions as well as the anti-apartheid movement.
Since 1994, South Africa has observed National Women's Day on August 9th, a celebration of the role of women in the anti-apartheid struggle. The day was set in honor of an August 9, 1956 demonstration by 20,000 women against the pass laws restricting the movement of Africans in their own country.
