Blackstone Bicycle Works
Blackstone Bicycle Works, often referred to as 'Blackstone Bikes', or simply 'Blackstone', is a youth education program of the Experimental Station. It's a bike shop dedicated to promoting ecological practices and empowering youth, teaching mechanical skills, job skills, and business literacy to boys and girls from the underserved Woodlawn neighborhood and Chicago's broader south side.
Your neighborhood bike shop...
Full service bicycle repair. A fresh batch of refurbished bikes goes on sale every Saturday, and that includes bikes of all kinds, from road and mountain bikes to models for women and kids. New and used parts for sale. And of course helmets, accessories and gear. Blackstone Bikes consistently receives 5-star reviews from Yelp! and Google reviewers. We are your neighborhood bike shop!
...but also so much more.
You may notice some of our youth shopkeepers fixing your flat or ringing up your bike parts or accessories. These youth are participating in our Earn-a-Bike program, where their hard work and acquisition of new skill sets are recorded and rewarded with their own bike to take home. We train and track hundreds of bike mechanic and small retail business skills. Our youths wear different colored aprons and 'apron up' to the next skill level to enjoy and learn from more aspects of the business and other opportunities.
Our youth education and mentoring programs have deepened from there and now include an on-site study lab and homework area, a college and career prep track, externships at bicycle industry and advocacy-related businesses, and paid summer internships for select youth. Blackstone Bicycle Works is also a summer meals site. There's even a Blackstone Youth Racing Club, and our competitors show both serious hustle and good sportsmanship at cyclo-cross races across the Chicagoland area.
Blackstone Bicycle Works Youth Education Program is open to all youths age 9-16, and is free of charge. Youths and their guardians must complete the registration forms before participating. Stop by the shop or send us an email for more information about youth participation.
